The only competitive advantage to a suburban mall is the ease of free parking. It has taken business from urban areas where access is difficult and often entails the horrors of parallel parking. The 17% they lost may have gone straight to online shopping and free delivery to homes. I suggest the shopping mall operators double their parking fees to offset the loss of 17%. If they lose more, double the parking fees again. Keep doing it until they have their costs covered, right? I graduated with an MBA in 1979 from the business school that ranked second in the world in teaching business ethics. Al knows who it is ("Go, Pioneers!"). I am saddened contemporary business models only entail the solutions of eliminate competition, cut staff, and raise prices. It seems so simple and it avoids the hard, patient work of building a business through learning markets, creating value, and offering service.
Amazon doesn’t charge me to park or use gas to visit their store. Yet another reason to avoid brick & mortar. Tenants at that mall need to be having a serious conversation with their landlord.
